Himalayas & Cultures Of Northeast India

Experience a private Northeast India tour through one of the country’s most diverse regions, combining the colonial heritage of Kolkata and Darjeeling, the Buddhist culture of Sikkim, the wildlife of Assam and the dramatic landscapes of Meghalaya.

Begin in Kolkata before flying into the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas. Discover Darjeeling’s tea heritage, mountain scenery and historic Himalayan railway before continuing to Gangtok, where monasteries, Buddhist traditions and high-altitude landscapes offer a completely different experience.

Continue east to Assam for the mighty Brahmaputra and a wildlife experience in Kaziranga National Park, before finishing among the waterfalls, caves and Khasi landscapes of Cherrapunji and Shillong. This private journey combines culture, mountains, wildlife and local traditions while allowing time to experience each destination at a comfortable pace.

Day 01 : Arrival In Kolkata

Welcome to India! On arrival at Kolkata International Airport, meet your Yatu Travel representative and transfer to your hotel.Check in and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure after your international journey.

Overnight: Kolkata

After breakfast, begin exploring Kolkata at Mother House, headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity and closely associated with Mother Teresa.
Continue to the magnificent Victoria Memorial, followed by nearby St. Paul’s Cathedral.
Later, visit the Indian Museum, whose collections provide an introduction to India’s archaeology, art and cultural history. Finish with a panoramic drive through central Kolkata, passing some of the city’s colonial-era landmarks and the iconic Howrah Bridge before returning to your hotel.

Overnight: Kolkata

After breakfast, transfer to Kolkata Airport for your flight to Bagdogra.
On arrival, meet your driver and begin the scenic drive into the Himalayan foothills towards Darjeeling. Travel through changing landscapes of valleys, forests and tea-growing hills before arriving at your hotel. Check in and enjoy the evening at leisure around Chowrasta and Mall Road.

Overnight: Darjeeling

Rise early for an excursion to Tiger Hill, renowned for its sunrise views towards Kanchenjunga and, on exceptionally clear days, distant Himalayan peaks. Return to the hotel for breakfast.
Later, enjoy a heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Toy Train experience towards Ghum, passing the famous Batasia Loop. The railway has UNESCO World Heritage status and is one of Darjeeling’s signature experiences.
Continue to a tea estate to learn about Darjeeling’s celebrated tea tradition and visit the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre, time permitting. Return to your hotel.

Overnight: Darjeeling

After breakfast, leave Darjeeling and drive through the Eastern Himalayan landscape towards Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. Enjoy scenic views of mountain valleys and the Teesta River along the journey.
On arrival, check in at your hotel. Later, enjoy a relaxed walk along MG Marg, Gangtok’s lively pedestrian promenade.

Overnight: Gangtok

After breakfast, begin exploring Gangtok’s Buddhist and cultural heritage. Visit Rumtek Monastery, an important centre of Tibetan Buddhist tradition, followed by the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology and Do Drul Chorten. Continue to Enchey Monastery, beautifully positioned above Gangtok. Later, enjoy time at MG Marg for local shops, cafés and independent exploration.

Overnight: Gangtok

After breakfast, set out towards the spectacular Tsomgo Lake, located high in the mountains east of Gangtok.
Travel through dramatic Himalayan scenery to the sacred glacial lake and enjoy time appreciating the surrounding high-altitude landscape before returning to Gangtok.

Important for international travellers: foreign tourists may visit Tsomgo Lake with the required Protected Area Permit, while Nathula Pass is not open to foreign nationals. Foreign visitors to Sikkim also require the applicable Restricted Area Permit.

Overnight: Gangtok

After breakfast, check out and drive to Bagdogra Airport. Board your flight to Guwahati, the gateway to Assam and Northeast India. On arrival, meet your representative and transfer to your hotel. Enjoy the remainder of the evening at leisure.

Overnight: Guwahati

Begin the day with a visit to the sacred Kamakhya Temple, one of Assam’s most important pilgrimage sites.
Continue to the Assam State Museum, offering an introduction to the region’s history and culture. Later, take a short boat journey towards Umananda Island on the Brahmaputra, subject to river conditions.
In the evening, enjoy an optional sunset cruise on the Brahmaputra River before returning to your hotel.

Overnight: Guwahati

After breakfast, leave Guwahati and drive towards Kaziranga National Park. Travel through the countryside of Assam before arriving at your wildlife lodge.
Later, depending on arrival time, visit the Kaziranga Orchid and Biodiversity Park or simply relax amid the natural surroundings. Assam Tourism also highlights tea gardens and local villages as worthwhile experiences around Kaziranga.

Overnight: Kaziranga

Early morning, set out on a jeep safari through Kaziranga National Park. Explore its grasslands, wetlands and forests in search of the famous greater one-horned rhinoceros, along with wild buffalo, deer, elephants and numerous bird species. Return to your lodge for breakfast and relaxation. Later, an optional second jeep safari in another park range can be arranged to experience a different section of the reserve.

Safari timings, park ranges and vehicle permits are subject to forest-department operation and availability. Kaziranga tourism is seasonal, with the main visitor season generally running from November to April.

Overnight: Kaziranga

After breakfast, leave Kaziranga and begin the scenic journey towards Meghalaya. Travel through Assam before climbing into the Khasi Hills towards Sohra (Cherrapunji). This is one of the longer road days of the itinerary, so I would keep sightseeing light. Depending on road conditions and arrival time, stop at a scenic viewpoint before continuing to your hotel. Check in and relax.

Overnight: Cherrapunji

After breakfast, explore the spectacular landscapes around Sohra. Visit Nohkalikai Falls, followed by the fascinating limestone formations of Mawsmai Cave. Depending on conditions and available time, Arwah Cave can also be included. These are among the principal nature attractions recommended for the Sohra region.
Later, drive towards Shillong, stopping at Mawkdok-Dympep Valley Viewpoint for dramatic views across the Khasi Hills. On arrival in Shillong, check in at your hotel.

Overnight: Shillong

After breakfast, begin with Elephant Falls, surrounded by lush forest. Continue to the excellent Don Bosco Museum, which provides a fascinating introduction to the cultures and traditions of Northeast India.
Later, visit the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians and enjoy a relaxed walk around Ward’s Lake. Finish the day around Police Bazaar, where you can explore local shops, handicrafts and cafés.

Overnight: Shillong

After breakfast, check out and drive from Shillong towards Guwahati Airport. On arrival, transfer to the airport for your onward flight, marking the end of your journey through Northeast India.
